Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto β€” What the Trade Means for Raptors Betting

Kawhi Leonard is a Raptor again. Seven years after the 2019 title run, Toronto traded for him in a deal agreed on 30 June 2026 and completed in mid-September, after a league investigation held it up for most of the summer. For anyone betting the Raptors this season, it changes more than the roster β€” it changes how every Raptors market is built.

I'm Andre β€” "The Six" β€” and I cover basketball for Betting Wingmen. This isn't a prediction piece. There are no prices here, because any number quoted today would be stale by the time you read it. It's a guide to what the trade actually was, why it took until September, and what it means for the way Raptors futures, game lines and player props get priced.

The Trade in One Paragraph

Toronto received Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-round picks in 2030 and 2033, and a 2027 first-round pick swap. In other words, the Raptors moved two rotation players and a long run of future picks for one star β€” a clear statement that this roster is built around the present.

Why It Took Until September

The two teams agreed the trade on 30 June 2026. On 9 July it was put on hold. The reason was an NBA investigation, open since September 2025, into whether a 28-million-US-dollar endorsement deal between Leonard and the company Aspiration broke the league's salary-cap rules. The league told Toronto that if it completed the trade while the investigation was still running, the Raptors would assume the risk of any outcome affecting Leonard. Toronto chose to wait.

On 2 September 2026 the NBA announced its findings: the Clippers had violated the league's salary-cap circumvention rules. The Clippers were fined 30 million US dollars and forfeited their first-round picks from 2029 to 2033; governor Steve Ballmer was suspended for one year and Lawrence Frank for six months. Leonard was required to pay the league 700,000 US dollars. With the investigation closed, the trade was completed in mid-September.

At Raptors media day on 28 September, Leonard said he wanted to move forward and talk about the Raptors rather than the investigation. For bettors, the practical point is simple: the uncertainty that hung over the deal all summer is resolved, and he is on the roster.

What Changes in Raptors Markets

A star arriving on a roster moves every Raptors market at once, but not in the same way or at the same speed. Three things to watch.

Futures and win totals. Books reprice a roster when a star arrives, and they don't all land on the same number. Before you bet a Raptors win total or conference price, compare it at more than one registered book β€” the gap between them can be meaningful. Our 2026-27 preview explains how win totals are built and why futures prices can vary between operators more than game lines do.

Game lines. When one player carries this much of a team's scoring, his availability moves Raptors spreads and totals more than an average player's would. A Raptors line posted before his status is confirmed is a different bet from the same line posted after.

Player props. A new primary scorer shifts usage across the roster. Early in the season, teammates' props can still be priced partly off last season's roles, before the books have seen how the shots and touches are actually shared. My read is that the first few weeks are when to look hardest at those teammate lines, and when to compare them across books.

For how win totals and futures prices are built, see the futures section of our 2026-27 NBA betting preview.

The Availability Question

Leonard played 65 games for the Clippers last season and averaged a career-high 27.9 points. Whatever your view of the Raptors, his availability is the key input for any Raptors market this season β€” futures, game lines and props alike.

The way to follow it is the official injury report. Teams must list a player's status by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game (1 p.m. on game day for the second night of a back-to-back) and file a game-day report between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, and the report keeps updating through the day. Read the day-before listing, check the game-day report, and decide in advance which bets you'd make if his status changes, so you are not chasing a number that has already moved.

The full routine β€” schedule, minutes, context, the day-before report and the game-day report β€” is in the step-by-step scratch section of our Raptors betting guide.

The 2019 Connection

Leonard's only previous season in Toronto was 2018-19, when the Raptors won the franchise's first NBA championship and he was named Finals MVP. He is also a seven-time All-Star.

That history matters to bettors for one reason, and it isn't nostalgia: a returning fan favourite can draw one-sided local money. When much of a province wants to back the same team, the price on that team can get shaded. That's a pricing point to keep in mind when you compare numbers, not a reason to bet for or against the Raptors.

Opening Week

The 2026-27 regular season opens on Tuesday 20 October 2026. The Raptors' first game is at home against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday 21 October at Scotiabank Arena, and the 82-game regular season runs to Sunday 11 April 2027.

What to Check Before Betting the Raptors This Season

A short list to run through before you put money on a Raptors market this season.

1. Compare futures prices across books. A star's arrival gets repriced differently by different books, so check a Raptors win total or conference price at more than one registered sportsbook before you bet it.

2. Follow the injury report. Teams must list a player's status by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game β€” 1 p.m. on game day for the second night of a back-to-back β€” and a game-day report follows. Read it before any Raptors bet, not just props.

3. Watch how teammates' props are priced in the first weeks. With a new primary scorer, early lines can lean on last season's roles; compare a teammate's points or assists line with how the minutes and shots are actually being shared.

4. Line-shop game totals. A Raptors total can differ between books, especially before a player's status is confirmed, so take the best number on the side you want.

5. Size futures for the long haul. A season-long position is tied up for months and exposed to injuries nobody can foresee, so keep the stake smaller than you would on a single game.

6. Set a deposit limit first. Every registered book offers one, and setting it before you start betting is far easier than setting it after a bad week.

The full injury-report routine is in the step-by-step scratch section of the Raptors betting guide, and the futures section of our 2026-27 NBA betting preview explains how win totals and futures prices are built.

What did the Raptors give up for Kawhi Leonard?

Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, second-round picks in 2030 and 2033, and a 2027 first-round pick swap, all sent to the Clippers.
