Kirill Marchenko Joins the Maple Leafs β What the Trade Means for Bettors

The Maple Leafs traded for Kirill Marchenko on Monday 28 September 2026, one minute before the deadline for opening-night rosters, and announced a six-year extension for him on 29 September. It is the biggest roster move of Toronto's off-season, it landed on the eve of the opener, and it touches almost every Leafs market a bettor looks at: futures, player props and, through the goaltender who came with him, the goalie markets too.
I'm Marcus β "Top Shelf" β and I cover hockey for Betting Wingmen. This isn't a prediction piece. There are no prices here and no projected lines, because any number quoted today would be stale within a week. It's a guide to what the trade was, what the extension is worth, and how a move like this changes the way Leafs markets should be read in the first weeks of the 2026-27 season.
The Trade
Toronto received forward Kirill Marchenko, goaltender Elvis Merzlikins and forward Miles Wood from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus received forward Matthew Knies, forward Steven Lorentz, defenceman Emil Andrae and a 2027 second-round pick. Columbus retained 18 per cent of Merzlikins' salary.
The timing was as tight as it gets. The deal was finalized at 4:59 p.m. ET on Monday 28 September, one minute before the 5 p.m. deadline for teams to submit their opening-night rosters, and the Leafs played their first game the following night. In plain terms, Toronto moved three players and a pick for three players, with Marchenko coming in and Knies going out as the headline names β and a goaltender added to the Leafs' depth chart in the same move.
The Extension
A day later, on 29 September, the Leafs announced a six-year contract extension for Marchenko. It is worth 75 million US dollars in total, an average of 12.5 million US dollars a year, and it starts in 2027-28. This season he plays the final year of the contract he signed with Columbus, which carries a cap hit of 3.85 million US dollars.
For bettors, the extension matters less for the money than for what it settles. Toronto didn't trade for one season: Marchenko is part of the roster plan for years, so he is a fixture of Leafs markets rather than a rental, and his role is worth learning properly rather than treating as a short-term experiment.
What Changes in Leafs Markets
A trade on the eve of the season moves several Leafs markets at once, and not all at the same speed. Three to watch.
Futures and points totals. Books reprice a roster after a move this size, and they don't all land on the same number. Before you bet a Leafs futures price or a player's season points total, compare it at more than one registered book. The gap between books can be meaningful early in the season, before results have given everyone the same evidence, and Leafs prices already carry a premium from one-sided local money.
Player props. New arrivals mean new roles. Who plays in the top six, and who gets power-play time, can take a few weeks to settle, and early props on Leafs forwards can still lean on last season's roles while that happens. My read is that the first weeks are when to look hardest at Leafs forward props, and when to compare them across books before the prices settle.
Goaltending. Merzlikins gives Toronto another experienced goaltender, and that changes how you read starting-goalie news. When a team has more than one realistic starter, a goalie prop or a game total posted before the starter is confirmed is a different bet from the same line posted after.
How Leafs futures are priced is in the Leafs section of our 2026-27 NHL season preview, the props routine is in the player props section of our Maple Leafs betting guide, and goalie markets are covered in the goalie props section of our NHL betting guide.

How to Follow Deployment
The new roster settles in public, game by game. Line combinations and power-play units show up first in the team's morning skate and its lineup announcements, and the starting goaltender is confirmed before the game. Check that confirmation before you bet any goalie market, or a total that depends on who is in net.
A simple routine before a Leafs bet: read the morning-skate reports and the lineup announcement for where Marchenko and the other new forwards are playing, confirm the starter, and decide in advance what you would do if the lineup isn't what you expected. A plan made before the news is better than a bet made in reaction to it.
The Early Schedule
The 2026-27 regular season opened on Tuesday 29 September with Montreal at Toronto, and every team plays 84 games, through to Saturday 10 April 2027. As of 2 October, the Leafs have played twice, both at Scotiabank Arena: a 3-2 loss to the Canadiens on opening night and a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on 30 September.
Next up is the first Battle of Ontario of the season: the Ottawa Senators visit Scotiabank Arena on Saturday 3 October. It is also Ottawa's first game of the season, and the Senators' home opener follows on 8 October against Philadelphia.
What to Check Before Betting the Leafs This Month
A short list to run through before you put money on a Leafs market in the first weeks of the season.
1. Compare futures prices across books. A roster move this size gets repriced differently by different books, so check a Leafs futures or season points price at more than one registered sportsbook before you bet it.
2. Read the lineup before props. Where the new forwards line up, and who is on the power play, drives shots and points lines. Check the morning-skate reports and lineup announcement first.
3. Confirm the starter. With another experienced goaltender on the roster, don't bet a goalie prop or a total until the starter is confirmed.
4. Line-shop game totals. A Leafs total can differ between books, especially before the starter is known, so take the best number on the side you want.
5. Size futures for the long haul. A season-long position is tied up for months and exposed to injuries nobody can foresee, so keep the stake smaller than you would on a single game.
6. Set a deposit limit first. Every registered book offers one, and setting it before you start betting is far easier than setting it after a bad week.
